Stepping out of the work truck, he severed the adrenaline music he had used to prepare his will and resolve for the day. Things hadn't been relaxed or safe since childhood. Many could argue that they weren't that way back then. But regardless of feelings or comfort it was time to get to work. They all depended on him in some way or another, and he knew this even without acknowledging it. Kids needed lunch, she needed reassurance, others needed example or an reference point to define character or integrity. He'd only ever known that he was responsible to lead whether they listened or not, whether he was confident or not... whether he was capable or not. This was the standard, and many other things had to be pushed from his attention until he had performed through. As he approached the job-site, he set the battered lunchbox on a stack of 2x4's. Without breaking stride, he began to assess the first task while his subconscious listed all the "opponents" of the day. His mindset that of a plow horse and an attitude forged in a world without softness, he recited his mantra... "it's time to lay some hate."
Inspiration: Musical inspiration from Zac Brown and Chris Cornel (Heavy is the head that wears the crown) and the theology around the "Crown of thorns," this piece and process was created while reflecting on our role as men and the expectations we have from culture and family to lead through sacrifice and adversity every day. The same beautiful "lightning" charging the crown, may very well be the same electricity destroying the wiring.
